New York dermatologist Dr Arash Akhavan said ‘The biggest thing we see infections from is yoga mats,’ They are known to carry infections. He suggests that you should ‘Bring your own or use a towel’ to class to separate your body from the yoga mat.
Using gym-owned yoga mats – he says- can apparently lead to fungal infections, such as ringworm which is a yeast found on the skin. There is also a suggestion that staph bacteria, which can lead to a MRSA infection, are among the biggest threats to communal mat users. I have mats and we use an antibacterial spray to clean them but I think, I should suggest to you that you buy one. I will still have mats with me if you want to borrow one at first.
I think that as quite a few of you have colds at the moment, that we should also think of the use of communal pillows. So may I suggest that if you’ve been coming for awhile it really is time for you to buy your own mat and to bring a rolled up towel or a cushion to act as a pillow. Mats sell on Amazon very reasonably and TKMAX is often a good place to look. Most people find the thicker padded ones are best.
