Who will your programmes work for?
My programmes are suitable for everyone. As a specialist instructor I am able to train those who just want to increase their overall fitness or those with specific medical problems
What can I expect from Fitness Function?
You can expect a programme tailored to your individual needs. In the class situation you will be with other like minded people, many of who shy away from the big gyms and their lock in contracts. Classes are lighthearted yet focused and you will never be made to feel a failure.
How are you different to other Gyms, Instructors or Personal Trainers out there?
I have struggled with my weight for many years and it’s an ongoing battle. I remember how daunting it was walking into my first exercise class. Through exercise I have managed to change my body shape and improve my self confidence. I get pleasure in seeing those changes in others too. I have a chronic back problem and through my wide experience of teaching a variety of exercise classes over many years, many educational courses and the tutoring I have received from osteopaths, have developed a unique class structure that enables me to live a full and active life. This approach helps others to do the same, reducing their dependance on their therapists. I am respected by local osteopaths and we work closely together. I am the areas leading Specialist in Exercise for Lower Back Pain but you don’t have to have back pain to work with me. As 4:5 people will suffer back pain at some stage in their lives the work we do is advantageous to everyone.
What type of person do I need to be to make this work?
To work with me I just ask that you commit to coming to working with me regularly, fitness can not be stored. I will monitor your progress and encourage work at you own level. I will challenge you I feel you need that and hold you back to an appropriate level if you are trying beyond your ability.
I’ve tried lots of stuff before and nothing has worked. Does this really work?
Yes this works. I am humbled at the tales I hear from my clients of how this has changed their lives. We not only build on their fitness in sessions but people are educated as to how to help themselves if problems do arise outside class. There are many testimonials from my clients available here.
What results can I expect?
You can expect to move more freely and have less aches and pains. You will understand what is happening in your body and why you are feeling as you do and what to do about it.
How quickly can I expect results?
Some people tell me they notice the difference after just one class
Is it going to be really hard?
Although we are not jumping around the exercises can be quite intense but you just do what you can to start with. I won’t push you beyond your ability.
It sounds great but I don’t have time
Some people are unable to commit to a regular class. I do offer the option to see me one to one, so we can work out a routine for you to complete at home with the possibility of a follow up with me from time to time. Spaces for this are extremely limited.
What if I don’t know anyone in the group and I don’t have anyone to go with?
The classes are kept small and it gives me great satisfaction to see how we have created a community and how welcoming the class members are to new people. We all have to start somewhere and the class members are very encouraging.
Are the sessions mixed men and women?
es we have quite a few men coming to classes but the majority in the classes are women.
If I can’t make all the sessions, is it still worth me joining the group?
Yes it is worth joining and if there is space I will endeavor to fit you into another class that week if I have space.
What do I wear?
This is not a fashion show and you don’t have to go out and buy special clothes. Loose trousers are best and a T shirt is fine. I’d rather clothing was not too baggy though, as I do need to see what your body is doing! The hall can be a little bit cool at times, so I suggest you bring a micro fleece or jumper to wear at the start of class if necessary.
I already exercise why do I need this?
Getting stronger from the inside out is important to everyone and even international sports people work on this now. Whatever form of exercise you do, you will perform better with core strength. They say a house built on strong foundations will stay strong whereas the house built on an unstable foundation is rocky. In addition to this different forms of exercise cause muscular imbalances and so rebalancing the body using, trigger point and myofacial releases plus more traditional stretches, enable you to perform better in your chosen exercise and be less at risk from injury.
How do I get started?
Add your name and contact details to the box to the right of the welcome video. You will be sent a link to fill in a screening questionnaire and invited to come to a free taster class. There is no hard sell either this approach to exercise is what you are looking for or not. If you think you need to see me on a one to one basis please inform us of this and this can be arranged but there is a fee for this.
To be honest I don’t teach pure Pilates anymore. No two pilates teachers teach the same way anyway but it is all paths up the same mountain. The system I teach, whilst based on clinical Pilates, is a combination of methods I have experienced and I believe I have taken the most relevant bits from many sources. I am qualified personal trainer and gym instructor and hold the rare qualification of Specialist in Exercise for Lower back Pain, this qualification is recognised at the highest level on the Register for Exercise Professionals. I am a qualified nurse and hold the qualification of Specialist Practitioner in General Practice, so I understand the body and many presenting medical problems, from my many years working in General Practice. I am a qualified sports massage therapist and whilst it is not something I now practice the training did give me insight into how the body functions. I am trained in Trigger Point Pilates and this brings in Myofacial and trigger point releases which we incorporate into class. Bringing this all together, I believe brings a unique approach to flexibility ad fitness suitable for everyone.
