So the first thing you look at is what are you wanting to do. Commonly this is to lose weight, tone up, or just be the best version of yourself that you can be at your age.
Make a list of what you want to change – it can be extensive, it’s a good place to start.
How I liked the idea that Gary Anderson a fitness instructor I have worked with before came up with for his personal training clients.
DREEMS all things that you can change and measure.
Drink most of us don’t drink enough. A good rule of thumb is to drink enough so that your urine is very pale. If it’s yellow you are not drinking enough. The exception to this is if you are taking B Vitamins as a supplement or Berocca because both of those supplements will colour your urine.
Rest is essential and there has been a connection between lack of sleep and food choices.
Eat right, if weight loss is your goal starving yourself is not the answer. Fat is no longer the enemy, in fact, it can help weight loss it just has to be good fats.
Exercise may be for a lot of you just committing to coming to your Pilates class weekly but I would prefer that not to be the only thing you do in the week!
Move get your body moving, I know it’s not so easy in the winter but getting outdoors for a walk really helps don’t underestimate this really available activity. It might be just making sure you get out of the chair at least every hour and walking around.
Stress so hard to avoid this at times. If you are stressed you release cortisol and adrenaline and these can lead to exhaustion and weight gain. If you have the smartphone app ‘CALM’ there are some nice little meditations on there for free or on youtube. A massage may work for you or try to find some other way that you know helps you switch off.
Why – why do you want to make that change? It may be that you have put on a bit of weight and for you, you would like to get down to a certain size again. You might have some aches and pains or health issues that you would like to improve rather than see them get worse. Maintaining health and being as active as possible would I think be a good goal for all of us and even little changes can make a difference.
